What? No Zincs!

Just a recent thought. I just encased my keel bolts with epoxy because I have an older Catalina 3o and I was worried about them. It then occurred to me that if there was a zinc in the bilge and one of the wires on the bilge pump or float came loose I would have some level of protection against DC current on the bolts. Any thoughts on this? Sean s/v Carnaby Steet

Electro-who?

Sean, I hope you never have to either tighten those keel bolt nuts or take the keel down for some reason!!! Keel bolts on reputable production boats ought to be stainless steel. ALL metals are subject to electrolysis, but I think SS will hold up a little better than plain ferrous steel. I would NOT entice them towards failure by putting a zinc into a wet bilge. Besides if you have enough reason to be concerned about water collecting in the sump, then you'll certainly know if the bilge pump wires come loose, and there won't have been enough time for the tiny wire end and the keel bolts to be together for electrolysis to do any real damage. If anyone is dead-set on encasing the bolts I strongly suggest latex, or something that can be scraped off with a knife-blade, but nothing permanent. Once that crack round the top of the keel on an older boat becomes visible from outside, you may wish you could get it loose enough to put more mish-mash or caulk in there. JC
