Al mechanic has just informed me he is unable to repack the stuffing box without moving the engine,(westerbeke 4 cyl) forward, Sounds like this shouldn't be standard procedure for this 1979 O'Day center cockpit 37. Any comments, advise welcome Comadoor@aol.com

Stuffing Box

Don - I'd be really suspect of this one. Without looking at your boat its impossible to tell for certain, but that stuffing box was almost certainly packed with the engine in place. I'd check with another mechanic. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Tight

I don't know the particulars about your boat, but on my Catalina 27 I have an Atomic 4 inboard and it is quite a squeeze. I think you need to get the opinion of a smaller sized mechanic.

try a pss

Don,it sounds like you may be a good canidate for a pss type shaft seal. You do not need to remove the engine! You do have to pull the shaft back (need to be out of the water)These seal are almost maintance free (just need to be "burped" when boat have been put in water every time it is launched) They do not need adjusting or drip like regular type packing gland. Ask you mechanic about replacing you stuffing box instead of repacking it. There is some info here in this web site (in the store section) about purchasing cost and installing, Good Luck !
