I have been trying to get over a cold so I can go mount my new 9.8 Tohatsu. I need to add oil to it and got thinking, I have no idea if there is an oil that is better suited to a marine environment?

Recess, the additive package in modern automotive

crankcase oil contains corrosion protection that is excellent for marine use. On top of that you can change your oil often. Note that the API rating is now at API-SN. Check for that rating on the bottle and use the viscosity weight that is recommended by the manufacturer.

Can I use any kind of oil in my Tohatsu 4-Stroke outboard?
For your 4-stroke outboard, you should use Genuine Tohatsu FC-W 4-Cycle Oil. Tohatsu FC-W 4-Cycle Oil is NMMA Certified and has been specially formulated to handle the higher RPM's that outboards are subjected to, as well as special rust inhibitors to combat the harsh operating conditions of the marine environment. Genuine Tohatsu Oil reduces friction & wear and ensures the internal components are properly lubricated for optimum performance. If Tohatsu 4-Cycle Oil is not available we recommend using an NMMA Certified FC-W 4-cycle oil formulated for use in outboard engines. Look for oils bearing the FC-W trademark.

Your Tohatsu 4-stroke outboard is equipped with an Engine Oil Warning Lamp (except for 2hp, 2.5hp & 3.5hp). When the warning lamp is off, it indicates that sufficient oil pressure is present. If the warning lamp is on (red light is on) or blinking on/off, immediately shut down your outboard and check the oil level. Replenish as needed. If the oil level is at the appropriate level and the light continues to stay on or blink, consult your local dealer for assistance (do not use your outboard until a dealer has corrected the problem).
You may notice the engine oil warning lamp come on when you first start your outboard. This is normal and should go off after a few seconds.

If it is on the recommended list I would put synthetic. I have been putting synthetic in the little diesel that I rebuilt. If I had it to do over I would have put 20 hours on it before I switched to synthetic for the break in period.

I wouldn't go to that trouble. I don't have the manual out, but I think that I remember that it has recommendations for oil other than 'Tohatsu' oil and I'll bet they just put their name on someone else's oil. I just used a good oil.

I'm not sure if later I'll go to a synthetic or not, but I wouldn't use it during the break-in period,

I use Shell Rotella - it's the only oil I have found that still has ratings for both gas and diesel. I use Rotella in our truck and car, outboard, diesel inboard, and diesel generator.

Diesel motor oil is fine to use in both diesel and

gasoline engines but oil rated for gasoline engines only is not advisable in diesel engines. Proper application is always noted on the bottle.

I use 30 weight RUM. If it's good enough for me it's good enough for the engine!:D Any top grade oil will work. See what the owner's manual recommends. Fair Winds and Full Sails....

outboard oil is specific (ash content??) because of the far lower operating temps verses applications thermostatic controlled so it should be outboard oil...

The "Tohatsu" label is not as important as the FC-W trademark.

Never heard of the Tohatsu Refininery. Go online, get the manual for your engine and it will tell you. Of course they want you to use Tohatsu because they buy the stuff and mark it up counting on people being paranoid. Oils all have grade ratings and you only have to use an oil with that particular rating.

All paranoia aside higgs, heres a list of FC-W rated oils that would satisfy Tohatsu's recommendation. I wonder why not owning a refinery makes an oil product lesser than another. It's the "recipe" that matters, not the cook.

Thanks Joe, you converted me to using an oil that is FC-W rated. It might never make a difference, but the outboard uses so little oil that the cost difference is no big deal. I'll get some and replace what we have in the outboard now as it is due for a change,
