Hi - I sail year round with family and friends and find that the manual jabsco head (29090) is not reliable enough for the heavy use by both avid and novice sailors.... the system - even when new - is tempramental based upon the design of the base valve gasket and joker valve - where often I need to intervene on assisting to pump out the bowl - due to the valves becoming temporarily obstructed...which is not what a user of the facility wants to ask for.... so here is my question - is there a manual head that is designed to be very reliable and easy to use .... I don't want to go with an electric head due to other drawbacks but will move in that direction if I need to... I would appreciate any guidance that you can offer ... more importantly - my crew would appreciate it tooooo : ) Jim

Raritan PH II

About $250...it's been rated the best manual toilet under $500 for decades. Keep it well lubricated, rebuild it every 5-6 years...it'll give you reliable and trouble free service for at least 20 years. Check it out here: http://www.raritaneng.com/products/toilets/manual/ph_2.html If space is tight, the PHC is the same pump on a compact base.

No comparison

Jim: There is no comparision of the Jabsco (the "j" stands for junk) to the PHII. We took Peggie's advice a few years ago and never looked back. These heads work well and are easy to pump (crew likes that). There is a well know sailor on this site that have spent more than twice the price of the PHII on rebuilding their Jabsco. If you need to replace the pump assy (the screw strip out), it will cost you $100. The rebuild kits are about $50. So just go for it. The hoses are usually almost a perfect fit. I changed out the raw water hose (is was gross) when we did ours, but that was it!

Yep...

PHII on my boat and I bought the "high boy" model since I'm 6'1" and had a hip replaced. Even put a base under it that is 1 3/4 teak to raise it even more. Great head!!!

Thanks

Thanks everyone! Looks like I have my spring project. I need to check out the high-boy - since half my crew is over 6'.
