There is a Catalina sailboat for sale near my, the sign on the boat states that it is a 1985.....I have not heard back from the seller yet, so I thought I could get some expert feedback from your forum. The serial number scratched into the upper right hand corner of the transom is cpse1993m83f......can anyone identify the model and year built (the 1993 seems to indicate 1993, but perhaps not, since the seller states it is a 1985)? Thanks, Kurt kurt@cmc.net

Hmmmm

Hmmm....well, as far as I know, all the catalina's that have a hull identification number start with CTY, which is the manufacturer's code for catalina yachts. But other than that, catalina's scheme would indicate that 1993 is the hull #, the hull built in '83 and built in the month of "f"...which I believe in 1983 was January. I just don't know about this "cpse" though, as I would expect CTY? Peter

It sounds like a Catalina Capri

What length is it advertized as. The "CPE" first 3 letters identify the manufacturer (http://www.uscgboating.org/recalls/mic_detail.aspx?id=CPS) The next five characters can be anything you want to assign so I am making an assumption that "e1995" is actually the Hull # (Typically is at Catalina) The ninth character identifies the month when the boat was certified (or built), the tenth character is last digit of the year when the boat was certified (or built) and the last two characters are the model year. You can assign any model year you want but it's smarter to make it pretty close to the year the boat was built. Most manufacturers start their model year in August, but some use June or July. It's up to you. However don't say the boat was built in 1997 and it's a model year 1999 or 2000. Sorry -- somewhere along the line the HIN number you gave doesn't totally fit right. My Catalina 36 HIN does fit into what I wrote above though. -- It sounds like you have an '83 model You could always call Catalina Yachts Here is some reading http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/hin.html http://members.aol.com/spinners/hin.html

Catalina??

I agree with Peter, If its a Catalina it should be CTY - Catalina H should be the next letter being the model if its a Catalina 22 Sail number whould be 11993 add a 1 to the front of the number after a point in 1980 when the 10,000 boat was built. no one knows what the M stands for, (Mistery?) 83 year built 1983 F is the month built, January

Go to the Coast Guard Website for the MIC

(MIC = Manufacturers Identification Code) http://www.uscgboating.org/recalls/mic_database.htm and type in CPS -- It will show that its a Catalina Capri Model

Capri is a good guess

I just looked at the registration for my Catalina Capri 18 and the first three letters are CSP, the next letter in mine is a D and then the rest fits w/ my hull number, month of manufacturing and the year.
