Annie, If you don't mind getting your feet wet

with any retractable keel boat you can get close enough to walk ashore.

Thats what anchors and radios are for... One of the reasons I like to sail is b/c our great great great great great grandmas and grandpas washed up here with out "kickers" on their boats but these days, there are always two ways to power your sailboat to or from home...always make sure both are in good working/rigging order. If I had to pick the one mechanical monster I worry the most about, it would be steering, but you can even do a little of that with sails and no rudder if your good...

Definetely my motor worries me the most

I was motoring in close quarters in a marina with the usual million dollar yachts when my transmission cable snapped. I had only seconds to respond to keep my boat from ramming into other yachts. The wind was blowing across my beam and I had very little control. Only a swiftly deployed anchor saved me from a potentially expensive out of control ramming. My lesson learned was to always be prepared for the worst to happen and have a plan for dealing with it. Not all things can be forseen but a cool head and quick thinking can go a long way to avoid catastrophe.

One other piece of advice for Capt Sid...

..next time that happens and your boat is out of control, make sure you aim for the cheapest yacht. ;D abe
