Does anyone know what kind of winch this is? I've owned my boat for 15 years and never had any problems with these winches but one of them is getting stiff and needs some attention, but I have not been able to find any information on them. Barry P. Broyles 1973 C22 #1909 "Brighteyes"

If it doesn't have a provision for cranking then it is

a snubbing winch. Possibly by Merriman.

Look like Barlow winches from the '50's to '70's

They have a slot each side at the top (per picture) where you insert the special flat winch handle to crank. Made of a wood type composite material and have been around for many moons. I had them on my C&C Shark 24 and found that they need annual maintenance the same as any other boat winches. Take them apart, rinse in Varsol, clean & dry, lubricate and reassemble. As Higgs mentioned - it's probably time to replace them.

That is an old english winch, made of a composite

material. You may cut a flat piece of metal to insert in the slot and use for leaverage as a winch handle.

that old winch

has a merriman style handle but is made from a material called tufnol which as others have said is a composite material. You can still buy new stuff in that syle for retrofitting/restoration. The origin was in the UK. Both Barton and Lewmar have had this style in the past.

Winch?

What you have there is a vintage 60`s british tufnol winch. If the winch is sticking it probably needs a little maintenence. Take it apart carefully dont lose any parts. Wash all interior parts in kerosene. dry the parts put the winch back together and grease all moving parts with a marine waterproof grease. This type of maintanence should be done every other season. Again if there are any parts missing you might be able to find them somewhere but if that becomes necessary your probably better off trying to find a pair of used bronze winches on the net or at a consignment marine supply. About the handles it u lose one you can make another out of ordinary steel bar stock.

I think it was..

"Race-Lite". They made a lot of the hardware on smaller boats in the 1970's. My 1970 William Crealock designed Clipper Marine 21 had lots of it including the Phenolic plastic snubbers.
