Catalina 36 mkII Havre de Grace, Maryland
I purchased a 2003 Catalina 36 mkii late last season. I assumed the wood thoughout the boat is teak, but it is much blonder than my old Hunter 30. What kind of wood is thoughout the salon? Is it a different variety of teak that what I'm used to? -thanks!!

My boat built in 2003 is teak/teak veneer. The color is quite light, likely because of the finish on it. Catalina says they used "Oxford Hybrid Varnish" on my boat, which IIRC is a bit tinted, but not dark. It's also polyurethane based so it would have sealed the wood instead of leaving it to oxidize easier with something like just oil.

My C-30 was very dark - likely oil type finish. I did maintain it with oil. The 387 is definitely a film finish - cannot feel the wood grain.

The 387 has gotten lighter over the years: where the P.O. had artwork is darker than where the interior was exposed.

Pic of my 387 to see if it looks like your 36: (And yes, I put something over the "dark spot")

Here's a good look at the woodwork in the salon. This is a 2003 Catalina 36 mkii.

To my eye it sure looks like Catalina was using the same interior wood and finishes on all boats in 2003. The veneer parts look the same. Possibly Brazilian, as it's commonly lighter than other species of teak.
