Welcome to the forum!!

Any markings on the furler that might indicate what mfg/model you have, otherwise can you please post photos? With that we may be able to identify the mfg/model and then download a manual to find out where the lub points are. Choose the correct grease as discussed in this article: Roller Furler Maintenance In 4 Steps (For Beginners) (godownsize.com)..........I use Furlex grease on my Furlex (Selden) furler.

I found the ghost of a label identifying it as a Z spar, and it seems they have their own furler. They say low maintenance and just Wd-40. Huh. Would have expected more...

In-mast manual maintenance calls for minimal maintenance is required. flush bearings with fresh water at end of season.

I have a z-spar mast and furler on my B411 delivered the furler mechanism to the factory in Gainesville , FL for re-work. (they also accept furlers sent in). The work was great - new line as well as cleaned/lubed bearings. I learned that Home Depot "green" waterproof grease works. I also removed, cleaned and installed the part of the furler that rides the mast pole. In my case, the bearing balls were in sorry need of cleaning and lubrication. In a previous post i recommended working on a clean surface to catch all of the balls, clean and re-lube. The bearing balls are NOT captured between the inner and outer race. the grease holds the balls in place while the races are assembled.

Good luck

Well, that's the thing, this boat is 25 years old and low maintenance doesn't mean no maintenance and from what I can see of the bearings in the lower screw unit, they're overdue for a cleaning.

Sail SF Bay, thanks for the manual. I looked up Z spar online and got a US distributor, where they recommended the WD-40.

At that point I would consult with a rigger for maintenance best practice on you older furler.
