What is this?

I recently purchased a C-22 and I am perplexed as to what the circular metal thing is in the companionway threshold on the outside? It is in the dead center and has three small prongs that stick up. What is it? Does it have a purpose other than catching your toe when going below?

got an idea

I recently installed a bracket that sounds like what you describe.. Its a compass mount.... I have a Tac-Tic mounted at the base of the mast but it only reads out in digital form... I missed having the standard unit to plan my course for the next tack..

?Clinometer?

I sort of agree with Randy, but the location below the threshold is usually reserved for a clinometer. That is a bubble device to tell the angle the boat is healing over. Dick

If so, it is in ancient form. I think it is a

mounting base for a compass. I looked at some of the new Ritchies this weekend and they had prongs similar to my boat. Anyhow, whatever it is, it's coming out this weekend.
