What is this?

Hi everyone. I'm nearly a year into an 1982 Newport 33. Still new to cruiser/liveaboard sized boating. I've been crawling around it to learn what and where important things are like wiring, plumbing, and through-hulls. This fitting is amidship under dinette seating just to the port side of keel.

Any feedback on what it is/does?

"Looks like it could be a depth tranducer"

That seems like the answer. Since it's not wired perhaps old?

Depth sounder transducer? View attachment 213381

My first thought might be more right, an ancient Arabian oil lamp. Try rubbing it on the sides.

That looks right. No wiring though. Could it be the former transducer? The boat's current transducer is next to it. It looks as though it is the newer type that reads depth without needing a through-hull.

Out of sight and out of mind through hulls make me nervous. Next time you haul out... see if it is actually still through your hull. If so, you may want to pull it and glass over the hole to reduce one point of possible failure.

Looks like the cable has been cut off the same transducer as picture above... Long abandoned..
