Barnett Butterfly (maybe) ??? Lake of the Forest
What is this???? *Update*

-So we picked up the boat and (it was at night) couldn't see any marking or names to tell me what it is. On the sail is the letter D with a slash under it at the top and then the number 41 lower. Any ideas as to what it might be???? So excited to start getting her ready to sail!


I'm am about to purchase and pick up a small 12' (to me looks like a Butterfly?). It's super cheap and does need some work, but I'm excited about a summer project. I forgot to ask the guy exactly what type of boat it is. To me it looks like a Barnett Butterfly, but I'm not sure. It's doesn't look like ones that I have found online. I'm new to sailing (and I know I should have asked the guy) and would love to know if anyone has an idea as to what type of boat it is. Thanks!

Hard to tell from that photo.. does look like a butterfly but the "V" shaped water deflector makes it look more like an O'Day Super Swift..

For 75 bucks you can't go wrong. You will be putting 5 times more money into her, but you will be on the water enjoying it.

The fact that it has a label from "Southern Yachts" tells me it isn't a Melges or an O'Day. A quick search shows a Southern Yachts in Witchita, Kansas. Melges is in Xenda, WI and O'day was in Ohio, I think.

Harleyworker - the current owner said that all that was missing was the centerboard (expensive, but my dad can build anything) and some of the rigging. Sails are stored in climate controled workshop and all the other parts are there. He also said there were no cracks or holes in the hull. It does need a good cleaning, but do you really think it will cost that much to fix up???

Higgs - I figured that the Southern Yachts in Witchita was just where the boat was bought. I guess maybe that's where it was made, but I thinking not. I go to look at it tonight - we'll see really quick if I will have a sailboat for this summer or not.

It always costs more to fix up a boat, than what the boat is worth. That's kinda a gimme. I bought my Catalina 25 for 2,000 with trailer, probaly put another 3,000 into it. If all it needs is a centerboard, then you might not be that bad. And like I said it's only 75 bucks, I've thrown that much away on a weekend at the lake with nothing to show for it.

I agree that it looks like a type of lake scow. How much more your going to spend on it is entirely up to you and what you ultimately want to sail. My first boat was a "free" 17' Thistle. Taught me alot about boat ownership and sailing in a hurry. Go for it and Have FUN!!!

Looks like a Barnett Butterfly. There are tons of them around the Great lakes. My sons both learned to sail on them. Spare parts should be readily available. I don't know where you are located, but if you look arounfd some of your local sailing clubs, you may be able to find spare parts reasonably priced (like free, if you ask the right people).

Someone said it looked like an M scow, but its too small for that MCs and M16s are 16 feet long have larger cockpits, and leeboards rather than a centerboard.
A couple of sources for parts might be SailPlace in Cedar Springs, MI; or Torreson's in Muskegon, MI among others.
