What is this thing? Some type of sail?

My friend had this tucked away on his 23' daysailer, it's been there since he bought it (used). The previous owner told him it was a replacement mainsail; we spread it out, and it's not

I don't recognize it. It's roughly squarish, made of sail material (feels like Dacron), has grommets, tapered edges on one end and short slits on the other. No batten pockets, no bolt rope, no markings, printing, or brand...

Does anyone know what this is for?? I'm at a loss...

I have an awning that looks just like it but with two poles and lines used to tie it off. Were there poles with it?? Checked but no photos of the awning up - but mine looks just like Indysailor's avatar above.

Thanks! So it's a boom tent - now we just need to figure out how it rigs Cool.

Unfortunately there were no poles, or directions.

It's a TARP..... unless you're sailing a square rigger.

Mine has sleeve at front and back. Poles slide into the sleeves. They have plastic loops pluged into the end of the metal poles. With pole over the boom the lines from loops tie off on the toerails aft (pull aft and out) and the teak grab rails on the cabin top forward (pull mostly forward). Lines from gromets in the middle of sides tie off on lifeline stachions. Mine also reaches far enough aft that it reaches my bimini so I have cover from just aft of mast to back of cockpit. Hope this helps!
