It's a feeder for your mainsail luff bolt rope.

40 foot cruiser with a bolt rope main??? I feel sorry for you.

But maybe the boltrope main is long gone, replaced with a slug or car system. Then it's redundant.

It's in-mast roller furling bolt-rope main on a Hunter 420 Passage. I recently had the sail inspected, sail numbers added, and some stitching re-done. Put it back up without the feeder.

Ah. In-mast furler, so it does not come up and down every day. Then the bolt rope makes perfect sense.
