Does anyone know what this ring at the top of my rudder post is called so I can search for one?

it looks like it does the same job as a bushing...and from the looks of it you will have to have one made by a machinist out of uhmw or something similar in strength

That is where the emergency tiller would insert if you lost wheel steering. Also, it may be the bushing holding your rudder in place, although I can't really tell from the photo.

Thanks kloudie and the rest who answered.

Yes, it is the bushing that holds the rudder in place and is where the emergency tiller connects.

Thanks kloudie for the link. Off the top of my head it seems to be 5" or so in diameter. I have a local plastics place that has done work for me before. I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard for them. The uhmw rod is sold by the foot, and the thickness of the bushing is about 1.5", so if I go that route I'll have a few extras for others.

Ya might be able to cut a deal with the local plastics dudes to machine it for you for free if they get to keep the remainder? (or significantly reduce the machine costs?)
Careful that the rudder doesn't fall out when you pull the pin to get the bushing out. Bushing may extend down the tube several inches?

That's a good idea! Thanks.

And thanks for the heads-up about the bushing extending down the hole. I'll be the one on the ground holding the rudder in my arms while someone else pulls the bolt.

I suppose I should have thought to ask if any other 27 owners of that era have the same rudder bearing.

For all I know, a PO could have installed it.

Sorry, I didn't see this earlier, but I have an '81 H27 and that is what mine looks(ed) like when I had it replaced with a new one. He also replaced the seal on rudder post while he was working on it.

Can you tell me where he got the replacement bearing?

Thanks!
