What is this odd looking (old) contraption?

Guess it was an old knot meter or something, the connecting wire has been slipped long ago near the doo daddy thingy. Just curious if someone knows what it was in its heyday.

It's located under the starboard galley ice box on my 75 oday 27 by the way.

Whatever it is I'm not touching it--it's been there that long, no need to aggravate it!

Depth transducer... glued inside the hull? I have the same one on the water side of the hull. it works with my old navman depth finder.

Thanks Denise and Tom, good to know what I'm dealing with before considering yanking it off one day. It's out of the way so it will probably ride along as a stowaway for some time to come. :)

Yep looks like an old brand depth transducer mounted as a shoot through. Many of these are the same freequency as today's depth instruments. It probably still works...

Thanks Maine, PO installed a newer transducer which is working, but if it ever goes out I'll leave this one in place as a backup.
