What is the small cover above the rudder stock called?

My 2004 Hunter 36 has a small round screw down hatch above the rudder stock - it's where you would insert the emergency tiller. Mine has broken and I'm looking for a new one. I've tried a few searches on here and in the Hunter shop but with no luck.

- Anyone know what that part is called?
- Anyone know if or where a new one is available?

I think you are referring to the Inspection Hatch. It‘s in the SBO Store. Hope this helps.

Looking further, its appears it’s not available here right now. Try calling SBO for a referral. There is a company call Seaflow that has various sizes also. I had a friend who need one recently and he bought it from them. I haven’t seen it but will in the next month.
Its a start for you at least.

Now, which has broken, the hatch or the emergency tiller.

If it's the access plate, go with SS and the overweight individual who stepped on the plastic one will no longer be a threat to your boat :

See if there is a manufacturer name so you can get the same. That way you will avoid having to replace the screwed-in ring. I think they are made by Beckson and Edson among others. Also check the diameter because they are made on a variety of sizes.

The metal one pictured above by @Ralph Johnstone looks nice, but in an emergency a cover that you can remove with NO TOOLS would be an advantage IMHO.

Well, almost no tools. The centre portion of the plate fits a winch handle which is always stored in a convenient location.

I was able to find the identical Beckson plate at the local marine store and the job’s done. If only other jobs were this easy

Sometimes it is hard to find replacement part fixtures for 20 year old boats. Different manufacturers make these inspection hatches, just find the size you need and install from scratch.
