What's the biggest engine that should be considered for a Hunter 26.5? Also should I go with a long or extra long shaft?

Check with Hunter.

Mat: You should check with Hunter on the rating for the engine. I would not think that anything larger 10hp would do any good except it is going to burn more fuel. There is a very substancial difference is the weight of a 2 stroke vs 4 stroke. As an example a 9.9 merc 2 stroke weighs 74# and the 4 stroke is 112#. The Nissan is 60# and 115#. I would assume that you are going to find that the Honda and Yamaha is going to be in the same range. You know that you can still purchase a 2 stroke engine that was mfg in 2000 and prior for use in California.

9.9 hp

9.9 hp will do the trick, with a long shaft to reach the swells. I dunno about "extra long shaft." More hp will not provide more power, unless the motor is on a MacGregor. The hull configuration of the typical sailboat drives this factor, so stick with 9.9.

Yamaha 8

I am going to purchase the Yamaha 8, 25 inch shaft, electric start, remote control, with power tilt for my 26.5. I am beefing up the motor mount. If you buy in Canada you will save about $500 US, however the warranty is no good in the US. If you are close to Canada it may be worth the trip.

Check next higher motor output rating.

I noticed that many of the manufacturers tweak their 10 hp motors to get 15 hp for an extra $100 or so. Same block and weight with more power when you need it! Is Yamaha the only mfgr. with available tilt in this size motor? What do I look for on the West Marine web-site to find your other solution? Going there next. Doug

More than HP!

As the HP increases so does the torque. You need to be sure that the transome is capable of handling the extra HP, Torque and Weight. I doubt that these WB Hunters even needs the 10HP., let alone 15HP.

More power gives better performance.

I strongly disagree with Steve's statement about hp needs of water-ballasted boats. If you are out in the open seas that is one thing. If however you require superior handling in tight marinas while fighting cross-winds (to keep from damaging the hull on docks and piers) then you need as much responsiveness as you can get. Linking the motor to the rudder helps in the tight turns but the fact remains that you have a long boat that requires quite a bit of space and time alter its momentum. My 8hp motor is unsatisfactory in the tight siuations. Having a few extra pounds and some minimal efficiency loss are a small price to pay for safer handling of your vessel. Doug

max hull speed

You do not want to exceed max hull speed by over powering your boat. max speed is 1.5 x the sq.route of lwl. 260 is approx 25'lwl 7.5 knots max hull spped

Hello Jim R

We put the same Yamaha on our 260. It is (you may have noticed I have said this before on this forum) "brilliant" It would seem that many want to put on a bigger motor but I can say that we have had the 260 out in terrible conditions and the little 8hp four stroke has handled it with ease. Besides how fast do you really need to go? If yours is a tiller steer I have managed to put a rough old sketch on the 260 photo forum of our home made steering linkage. Works perfectly and with the power lift makes using the motor very easy.

Think Weather &Freeboard

Recently I was on an H260, we got tired of fighting the sudden puffs, did the honorable thing buy dropping the sails and firing up the 9.9 HP outboard for the cruise back to the marina in 2 foot washboard. Bucking a headwind, gusting up to 20 kts, the best speed we could wrench with a max throttle was 2.5 kts on the meter. The question is, would a 15 HP counter the freeboard wind resistance?

Extra Long Shaft

Matt Forgot to tell you that I got the extra long shaft to prevent it from lifting out of the water when it was rough. One more thing about the yamaha. It has a reverse thrust propeller which gives you better control in reverse. Bill
