What is the fitting on the bottom of the boom used for?

Does anyone know what this plastic fitting on the bottom of the boom is? I want to use it for attaching a boom brake using a soft shackle.

That's a slide-adjustable piece for attaching/passing through lazy-jack lines. With the system you have there, you probably don't need it for that function. Those are plastic. You can get from Selden strong SS D-type rings that fit in the same slide which can then be bolted in place (you drill and tap the hole at where you want the ring to reside). That would probably work better for you.

Boom brakes can exert really big loads, and sometimes even a shock load if the brake is inadvertently left slack. I would not trust plastic. Mine is attached with a metal bail that is captive in a slot and bolted in place.
