Getting Cherry Teak

Strip and bleach wood. Clean, Sand with 80g then 120,180. Use Schooner 96 varnish. sand with 220 between coats. try to keep wood surface even. each coat will fill low spots and soon, maybe by 7 coats it will look wooof, great. when you get n your later coats 320sand. I have a 25 and have just finished my wood and, wooden boat folks were impressed.

Cherry?

Dean, I have no Idea why anyone would like to change the look of teak to Cherry. But it can be done if you are willing to work at it. First you need to strip the trim of all varnish then clean with West Marine two part cleaner. Two part cleaner system is the best and will make the teak look white or light grey. This system is great but, if the wood was not painted then someone has coated it with teak oil and dirt and weather had made it black and this is what comes off and will run all over the decks if your not careful. After you put of the second part "B" You need to wash it and use lots of water. I took most of mine off the boat when I did it. After this buy some dark cherry stain and on a small piece try it. I have never put cherry stain over teak so i don't have any idea how it will look but from experience I would say that it will be lighter then you would like. In which case you will need to experiment or find someone in your area that can help. Years ago when manufactures wanted to make a cherry looking piece out of pine or maple etc. they used a green stain first then the cherry stain over it. This was very effective and the finished product had that nice deep color. I don't know if this is available today. Once the staining is complete I would use the NEW Clear Cetol marine by Sekkins. it tough and provides UV protection. Plus it does not chip easily. I put on three coats with a light sanding in between and it lasted three years without a problem After two years I light sand and put on another coat. 6 -7 coats is not uncommon but it is a lot of work to get it in shape. Good Luck Charlie

Cherry or Cherry?

I cracked up on this one. Dean, do you want cherry-colored teak or do you want your teak to be "cherry," as in "looks it's best"? Well, either way, you have advice from both perspectives! LMAO! LaDonna

Right on LaDonna

When Dean said that he wanted to match the teak to the "boats strips" I new he was not talking about "Cherry" as in real nice! Everyone has a choice? Charlie

Why?

The exterior teak will be ruined if you "cherry" it. You're better of repainting the stripes. The stripes are only paint; teak is a proud wood that deserves to be left alone. Call me a purist, but I don't know why anyone would mess with the teak. If would be like taking my oak dining room table and refinishing it to look like pine, because that's what some other piece of furniture is made out of.
