Hi All,
I need to change the oil on my Yanmar 3QM30H - I have to remove the old oil through the dipstick port - what is the best device to use to pump the old oil out - how often do you folks change oil on your diesels?

thanks as always for your sage advice!
Regards,
Jim

Great minds! That is 2 for the vacuum extractor.

I think the one that Ed is pointing out is the same thing as the one from WM. I just changed my oil last week with the WM version.

Well, I'm not sure it is the best because I haven't tried any others:

It takes about 5 - 10 minutes to empty the sump (oil must be warm). I have used it with a cordless drill and a regular 120V drill fed from the inverter. I would like to try a vacuum unit to see if it is faster...I change my oil just prior to haul out (once a season) or after 100 hrs if I have done a lot of time under motor.

BTW, would you be willing to send me your hull # and the last letter of you HIN for the H37C database I am building? (see thread "Evolution of the cutter") I have very little data on the 1983 model, other than my own. Thanks! jameslegere [type 'at'] eastlink.ca

Same pump concept, $3.00. Says for water, works fine for oil. Slow but works well at the job (set the drill to locked-on operation and do other things while it works):

I also have one of these for my various engines (lawnmower, cars, boats, etc). Pumps high volume for it's toolbox-size. Includes a "catheter" for oil dipsticks and fill ports:
