The 1985 Hunter 31 I just bought has a small line, about half the diameter of the main halyard, that exits the front of the mast about half way up. At the bottom of the mast it exits like the main halyard, but doesn't lead aft. There don't appear to be any other parts on the boat associated with this line. Any suggestions what it might be?

If it just exits the mast with out a swivel block then it is a halyard for a inner foresail. should be some attachment on the deck for the inner fore guy. if there is a swivel block right after it exits the mast then it is a spinnaker halyard. It would be above the jib halyard for a spinnaker and below for a inner foresail.

could also be a spinnaker pole topping lift. Supports the pole when tacking.

There is only a main and genoa, and I don't see any other parts or hardware that would be associated with an inner sail orr spinnaker.

Topping Liift

Spin pole topping lift. most 31's had that installed as original equipment whether or not it was used that way. the red line in the bottom center of this shot shows the topping lift on my boat.

That's the same place that I am talking about kloudie1. Thanks for the input. I guess it made sense to go on and rig the mast for a spinnaker from the get go.

Don't have one...

but would be nice to have one to hold up a whisker pole to hold out the jib in light downwind air...
