What is it with these boat brokers. Are they there to make the deal or break the deal. I am fed up with this. Is it possible to buy a Catalina 30 from a Catalina 30 owner without having to deal with a broker? Are there web sites for this? Do I really need a broker? It seems to me all I need is a good surveyor and a copy machine. The process seems so simple even a broker could do it, Maybe!

What you need is a BUYERS broker. They get paid out of the commission the selling broker gets. Thus, they work for you, and you pay nothing. A friend of mine is a broker and sold my C30. Email me offline for a referral. You'll be hard pressed to find anyone more qualified for that hull. ksfischer at mac.com

This must be de ja vue as I am having the same problem trying to deal with these boneheads.. I have contacted 3 different brokers and have been trying to do a deal with them and they all after several emails come up with the old stand by excuse of "computer problems"........ If I was the owner of one of these boats that these so called brokers have on their books I would be pretty ticked off at their inaction.

Hello, I was boat shopping in the spring. I met and dealt with lots and lots of brokers. Most were OK, a few were terrible. One was great and that's the one I bought my boat from. He's in NY so he won't help you but just be aware that some are very good. He knew the boat, he explained the purchasing process, he was available during the survey, he worked with the surveyor, he made sure the owners made good on their responsibilities, and he even helped me rig the boat for my trip home. There really isn't enough money there
to motivate them if you think about it. The comission is 6%, so that's $600 on a $10,000 boat. So that's $300 to each brokerage and you may not be dealing with the primary broker at all but an agent so maybe up to 4 people are splitting that. It's no wonder it's hard to motivate them much for a boat under $100,000.

Henry @ triton yachts in oriental can get it done. He helped me with a ridiculous transaction due to my lack of finances. the deal could have died at any point but he kept it together and now i have my c-30 1980. Anyway hes my only experience with a broker that was good. The catalina was my second boat purchase from triton. I look forward to someday working with them for a great big catalina. My catalina was purchased for 11,600.00 so I know the commission wasn't great. I think with all things broker there are a few good ones but they are few and far between. OK enough of this lame-o testimonial josh

agolden, the commisions are actually negotiable
Brokers will tend to lower their commission to be able to list a boat (or a house) when it is in the upper ranges as they know they are going to get a lot more money on the boat (or house). Think about it, how much more work does one have to sell a $750,000 house over $325,000 house. The answer is usually not twice as much work (in fact the better conditioned higher end houses tend to sell quicker) So a broker will negotiate on commisions just as on a boat. At least the smart ones do. Now a $10k boat doesn't have as much incentive thus the comments as was previously mentioned and some of these people are making 10 times more for the same sale of one boat.
