I am looking for a job asa marina manager. My take on it is it isn't very difficult, but you should see the wanted ads! Check out the City of Ft. Lauderdale's for a marina manager. I could do the job in a heartbeat, but have never been a "marina manager" before. So, what exactly does one do as a marina manager? Accounting, sales, leadership, docking? What does your marina manager do?

Think of an apartment manager, but more.

Most marinas are like a condo or an apartment complex. True, you don't have a big lawn, but you still have to manage yard maint staff to keep the grounds clean and trimmed. Another difference to an apartment complex, these condos moves and bob around, and bump into each other. Yes, the responsibilities also includes accounting and monthly billing, some walk-in sales, lots of leadership, oversee all the boats and docking, manage the money allotted, both monthly and project expenses. The marina manager answers to the condo's board of directors.

why don't you ask a marina manager....

...if you really are interested in the job. Your attitude towards a job you don't understand is a bit revealing. Check your ego at the door when you talk to a manager and you may learn something.

You forgot include dealing with the tenants, J.C.

Managing a marina is a 24/7/365 job that's one big headache. High employee turnover...state and federal environmental regulations...CG regs...weather...grounds maintenance, dock maintenance...profit/loss accountability (EVERYTHING accountability)...collections...and tenants, each one of whom wants HIS issue or problem dealt with NOW. An easy job? About the only job I can think of that MIGHT be more stressful is traffic cop in Baghdad.

marina management qualifications

Here’s a current classified ad for a Marina Manager, listing (3) specific qualifications: “The Hempstead Harbour Club, at Glen Cove, New York, seeks a manager with boatyard and offshore skills. Captain’s licence preferred...” How is it that you're so certain you "could do the job in a heartbeat", When you "have never been a marina manager before", and have to ask what "exactly one does as a marina manager" ? Respectfully, Gord

I forgot to include...

That you also must have considerable and varied "handyman" skills--electric, small engine, plumbing...'cuz if something breaks, fails, or wears out and your employee responsible for fixing it has quit, is in jail, or just hasn't bothered to show up, YOU have to fix it.

And the one you mentioned is a city marina.

So instead of just reporting to an owner - who presumably knows something about boats, marinas, harbors, boaters, etc., the manager of a municipal marina gets to answer to a bunch of politicians who presumably know nothing about any of that.... (or anything else, of course!) And every single member of the City Council will have at least 2 brothers-in-law who own zillion-horsepower stinkpots, think speed limits and pumpout stations are for sailboats, dump their empties over the side, party loudly all night (not like us civilized sailors, of course) and generally act as if they are above the law - which they are, of course! Thanks, I'll take the Baghdad traffic cop job. Cheers, Bob s/v X SAIL R 8
