what is a liner and what is the purpose?

I am trying to figure out how easy it would be to gut and older catalina and redo the inside if needed, meaning new bulkhead, sole plate, etc. I have heard some mentions on various sites about liners, but have yet to figure out what they are and if catalinas have one. Also, how does catalina attach the deck to the hull in the 22 and 25?, throughbolts or what?

Liner

Carl; The liner is used on production boats to cut the costs associated with finishing the interior. It is a fiber glass unit that stiffens the hull, and provides the 'furnature' for the interior. It has locations to anchor the bulkheads to, both in the hull liner, and the overhead liner. I believe the hull and deck are joined under the rub rail with screws, and some through bolts. A few years ago a friend, and I talked about taking a chain saw to the interior, and putting in a real one. But we were only joking to each other, it would be easier, and cheaper to buy one already built right. But then price is one of the reasons we choose a production boat (Catalina, Hunter, Beneteau, etc!). It would not be easy. Mike

kind of what I thought

Thanks Michael, I probably should just buy a boat in good shape to start with so I can spend more time sailing. What got me thinking was that I have been reading a lot of books about sailboat construction("From a bare Hull" etc.) , and nothing about it seems very difficult if you had a "fixer upper" providing a good hull and deck to start with. Time consuming , yes. Maybe for my second boat..
