what exactly is meant by a tall rig on a C27? The question came up when I went to order a new mainsail cover. Is it just a taller mast or does the boom ride higher as well? thanks.

tall rig

go to "boat specifications" page on the C27 website, http://www.catalina27.org/, for exact dimensions. Compared to the standard rig, the "tall rig" has a taller mast, shorter boom and a short bowsprit to accomodate a high aspect sail plan. Hull is same as standard, but PHRF is lower because of larger sail area.

Bigger Sails Catch more Wind

Since the Catalina Corp is located in So. California which is also renown for light winds and racing was growing in popularity back in the days of the first 27s it was found to be a cheap fix to modify mast and sprit to increase sail area vs hull or keel. The boat was a bit heavy anyways but structurally accomodating for the increase in stress loads of the larger sails and has proven to be a great boat for cruising and racing ever since. Kind of like headers are a cheap and easy horsepower boost to the cars of yesterday.
