I searched

but I couldn't find a good example of one. As I understand it, a barberhaul is used to adjust the "slot" between the main and jib. Rather than adjusting the jib sheet which also adjusts the sheet height, the barberhaul isolates the trim adjustment athwartship. Am I close Mac-fans?

A barberhaul is another line used to adjust the jib clew--usually to bring the clew further inboard to narrow the slot between the main and jib to increase speed. This can also be done by pulling on the windward jib sheet. It's another one of the dozens of ways to squeeze an extra quarter-knot out of your boat. IMHO, barberhauling is of little value unless you have perfect sail trim and never wander off course. Then again, I feel the same way about backstay adjusters, boom vangs, Cunninghams and travelers. The fewer lines, blocks and holes on my deck, the better. Had a great weekend outing on Lake Pepin, a natural lake on the Upper Mississippi River. Sailed hard in steady 15 mph winds and even towed the kids in the inflatable for an hour. Beached our 26S on a sandbar for a swim call and anchored out for another. Love this boat. Happy sailing!

Barber Haul

The serious racing scows all use them. I had one on every racing scow I have ever been on. As has been said, it does very little unless you are trying to get the very last 1/4 knot out of an otherwise perfectly trimmed sail.

Look here for Barberhauler

Don't apologize for asking questions, fools don't ask. However, the guys are on it as usual, the Barberhauler was named after it's inventor John ? Barber who invented this trick to improve his racing speed. Look here to see it: http://www.jotzsails.com/dstt.html As mentioned it's an extra sheet to pull the jib in towards the mast just a little more and increase the angle. It's pretty simple actually but purely a racer's gadget. Steve
