In an emergency situation.......lets say that you are away from your home port and your universal m-18 engine starts overheating. If you suspect that the thermostat is sticking closed or restricting the flow, would it hurt anything to remove the thermostat and run without it? Would it hurt to run it like that for a week or so?? Thanks in advance, I've learned much from this forum already.

low therms

This is just a guess, but if its like a car, the only thing that would happen is that the engine would run cooler than normal. Engines run at optimal efficiency at a certain temperature. It is sure that running with a thermostat stuck open is much better than stuck closed ! Duane

Thermostat removal

Duane's postulations are all valid. Your Universal M18 has a self contained cooling system. The thermostat controls coolant bypassing the engine until the proper temperature is attained. With the thermostat removed, coolant will flow more through the engine and the result will be a lower operating temperature. The engine won't be happy but it will get you home.
