If your O'Day didn't exist, what kind of boat would you own? A Hunter, Catalina or Beneteau? A quick Capri, Laser, or JY? A more expensive Sabre or Tartan? Would you go for more keel, ala Island Packet, or less weight in J-Boat? Which boats interest you and why? Present your preference here, then vote in this week's Quick Quiz at the bottom of the home page.

If There were no O'Days

If there were no O'Days, I would probably lean towards Sabre. They have pleasing lines and sail well. They do not seem to be as well laid out in the cockpit and cabin, however, and I was disppointed in trials, that they seem to have no full sized berths. To the contrary all berths seem to be undersized to allow for other features.

A Canadian Perspective

Even though the O'Day was an American boat, I was fortunate to find one. There were a few dealers in Ontario during the heyday of O'Day (nice rhyme). Some other very pleasing boats I would be interested in built in Ontario, include, anything from C&C. The Niagara series, especially the 35, by Hinterholler. The Ontario series, specifically the Ontario 32. The Gozzard built Bayfield line, specifically the Bayfield 29, 32 and 36. And of course The Alberg 29, and 30 or any Alberg for that matter. A couple of other good line of boats was the CS (Canadian Sailcraft) line, specifically the CS36 (Merlin) and the Mirage series (especially the 27). Yes there was some fine sailboats built in Ontario, and Quebec during those heady days of plastic. Don
