What I did to get ready for Irene

Put another line to the mooring, in case the pennant snapped. Renewed the chafing gear (heavy sailcloth sewn on, with the twine passing through the pennant). Closed all the seacocks. Took the main and the dodger off and stowed them below. Tightened the halyards and wrapped up the coils with some light line passed around the mast, so they couldn't go flying. Took the topping lift off and lashed the boom into the cockpit (to avoid the possibility of the the topping lift letting go). Stowed the bow anchor. Made sure the main sheet was well stowed, so it couldn't foul the scuppers. Checked the bilge pumps.

But the most important things came much earlier: making sure the forward cleat, its backing plate and the smooth bronze chock are bombproof, and, last but hardly least, hiring a good mooring company, year in and year out, to maintain the mooring. (250 lb mushroom, 5/8 inch chain and 1/2 inch chain, 3/4 inch pennant).

Then I lay awake much of the night, listening to most God-awful gusts come barreling out of the west, in which direction my mooring is exposed to a 6 mile fetch. . .

Wasn't I happy to see Journeyman bobbing lightly in the bright sun early this am. She had quite a night!Nicholas H. Walsh P.A.

Glad to hear Journeyman is okay! Here in the Bangor area we had a 12-hour power outage and a couple of trees down in our yard. We did not launch Double Fantasy this year so she was safe and sound in our driveway. During past hurricane threats we prepared Double Fantasy in the same manner as you did, even though she is is a very snug harbor. We have seen boats sink and/or have their sails ripped to shreds due to lack of preparation.
