GPSs are nice. I have one. But what is that point, mountain, or light? Is that ship really closing? I still need a good hand compass that I can take good sightings with. Which ones have you used and why?
I like my Tasco Offshore binoculars with the compass. Actually I wish I had a better pair. My Tasco's are hard to sight through and get a compass bearing at the same time. I don't know if this is because I have glasses or what.r.w.landau
I can hang it around my neck using the lanyard, thus keeping it close at hand, and it came with a couple of illuminating sticks for night work. I haven't used them yet. It's made of soft rubber and seems to be very durable and as David said, the price is right at $25.
I love my Tasco Offshore 54 (7x50) binoculars. I gave up a long time ago trying to find binoculars that would work while wearing my glasses. I take my glasses off during sighting. This model Tasco has a compass that is lighted and has 1 degree increment; also has a grid for determining range. It has proven to be very accurate. They are water-proof and dry nitrogen filled. The lens coating reduces haze and is supposed to reduce light at the red end of the spectrum making them ideal for use on the water. I decided to purchase this model after reading a very glowing review on a sportshooting website that usually reserves their best comments for Zeiss, Swarovski, Leica and the high-end Nikons. The reviewer rated them very high for value. The image does get a little soft around the edges . . . but that is the compromise for not paying $1500+ for Zeiss lenses.BoatUS and West Marine sell this model for around $300 (less when on sale). I found another internet vendor (non-marine) selling them for $210 plus $5 delivery. Don't waste your time with a monocular for range and bearing. These Tascos are great!
They are Action-Direct at http://www.action-direct.com/69.htmI've purchased only this one item from them. The current price seems to have increased $10 or so but they now advertise free shipping. Every three or four months, I get an email from them peddling some other items. I merely delete the email.I had absolutely no knowledge of them before this transaction. An internet search for "Tasco" and "OS54" turned them up. I called them to verify their physical location which is in Florida(I'm not very trusting . . . can you tell). Anyway, they delivered as promised within a week.
