What exactly mixes with KO?

I've got a question about what can be used with KO in a flushing system into a holding tank. If you remember I installed a new Raritan Elegance in early June and have been using it almost exclusively ever since. I bought your book back then (truly a bible of knowledge) and have been reading the posts in this forum since. After doing everything suggested, I've finally overcome all head and holding tank odors in the boat. It's amazing, really!

Right now I add some KO with about every other post-pumpout (I pump out my tank every 2 weeks), and I use the CP product exclusively for scrubbing the toilet and keeping it clean. Before I started using the KO, I was flushing a cup of liquid Tide down the toilet after every pumpout (I had done the big Tide thing early on), but I stopped doing that since I've been using the KO (the nasty odors didn't truly go away until I started using the KO).

My question is this: what, other than CP, is acceptable for mingling with KO in the tank? You mention in the book that a tiny bit of Softscrub to clean the toilet is okay, but is the cup of Tide thing okay as well? And is it necessary any longer? I don't think I'll ever be able to get my holding tank insides cleaned off (power boat), but does the Tide help to keep more gunk from clingling to the sides of the tank?

I'm still planning on installing a Purasan system, but will have to schedule it for next year (budget issues).

I don't think a cupful of liquid Tide will do much harm...

But I also think it's a waste of good detergent to put a cupful down the toilet after every pumpout. A gallon jug of it at the end of every season to clean out the tank before winterizing it is MORE than often enough!

Nothing should be combined with K.O. that's 'antibacterial' or any chemical product.

NO household chemical bowl cleaners should ever be used in a marine toilet, no matter what you use in the tank...no any pine oil cleaners, bleach, anything containing bleach, Lysol or any other household chemical cleaning product...they're all highly destructive to rubber and sanitation hoses.

However, that doesn't mean you can't put a SMALL amount of ANYthing on a rag or sponge to wipe out a bowl and then wipe up the cleaner...the few molecules left won't hurt anything.

to scrub the inside of the tank, add 40 pounds of ice and run the boat roughly works great on my travel trailer.

how do you add the ice? Toilet plumbing is somewhat constricted and deck pump out is restricted by mascerator? Bob

Macerator shouldn't be a problem

If the macerator were in the line to the deck pump out, it would create a blockage that would make pumping out impossible. It has to be in a line that tees off from the pumpout line.

However, without an inspection port in the tank that would allow you to open it up and dump it in, the plumbing would make adding enough ice to accomplish anything a challenge on most boats.
