hey I have been reading this site extensively and have found some great information.I bought an oday 25 about a week ago and love it. I have been reading alot of posts about the 25 having cb issues. The couple of times that I took the boat out the cb went up and down with ease. I am going to be pulling the boat in about two weeks and would like to get a good look at my cb. How will I be able to tell if it has ever been worked or if its in good condition? Does anybody have any pics of what the cb looks like so I know what to look for. Im figuring when the marina pulls the boat out of the water I am going to have to check the cb before he blocks it up-is that right?

oh..also..what connects the cb to your boat? I know that there is a line that is attached to the tip of the cb and that goes through the deck and then you use that line to pull the cb up and down..now what about the base of the cb..is that attached to the boat with another line or bolt or is the cb form fitted to stay in the keel? In other words if my line to raise and lower the cb snaps is there a chance my cb might fall right out of the keel and sink to the bottom?

Congrats on your new boat! Someone will soon chime in with more specific info, but... The c/b is hinged so it can come down out of the keel similar to a blade out of a pocket knife. When raised, the board folds back and up into the keel casing- it is then horizontal and parallel to the boat bottom.
When you release the line, the board swings close to straight down. It is in this position that it helps keep the boat from sliding away from the wind. You really need the board down to get close to max performance.
I think your board is hinged on a fiber (like plastic) rod . If the line breaks, the board will usually stay with the boat due to the hinge.
Most of the O'Days that had nonstop c/b problems were one's with an iron keel casing- These would expand with rust and trap the board and were a real pain. I am pretty sure yours is the better lead keel housing that is encased with fiberglass- much more trouble free. As long as the line and hinge are in good shape and you coat everything with anti fowling paint, they work well.

Centerboard

Check the archives cause I remember one of the fellas posting show & tell pictures of the whole setup, I'm not sure of the 25 but my 32 has a plastic tube that goes through a hole in the center board and acts as the hinge and this tube is held in place by hardware and wedges inside the keel trunk. (I would think there all like this)
When I haul my boat and its in the straps getting a wash down on the bottom I lower the board so they can clean up inside the keel trunk and then I inspect the board to see if any work has to be done and then plan on a spring repair before relaunch, I cannot work on mine while on the hard because the way its blocked up with the keel sitting right on the ground.

I'm really not sure about the pendant line connection on the centerboard of your particular OD 25. The late 1980s 25 and 26s had a long thin stainless steel shackle with a small rigging pin and cotter pin attached to an eye splice in the braid pendant line. The trailing edge of the CB has a 1/4" hole where the pin shackle connects to the board. The earlier OD 25s had a pendant line which was made up of a combination of a rope and short wire. The wire entered a small hole through the trailing edge of the board, and terminated in a larger hole on the side of the board. Some boards also had a notch cut out where the cable entered the board. What I would do is attach a line to your pendant line and run to a stern cleat so that you can let the board down while the boat is off the ground in a sling. Then you can check it out and know for sure. The pivot pins on these boards are made of 1" solid fiber. It takes a lot to wear them. The pin on my 86 OD 222 had no wear at all. Can they wear? I suppose so if you're accustomed to leaving the board down when you're boat is at a mooring, slip, or at anchor, but no one in their right mind would do that. Then on the other hand, (four thumbs and a finger) :D I've been known to forget to pull my board up, but still, the pins don't wear that easy. The centerboards don't drop out of the slot that easy, too. The Polysulfide caulking alone that hold the wedges for the pin, could hold that CB from falling out. If the PO had the board out and used the wrong caulking for the wedges, it's possible that the board could come out, but then, you have the plates in place which should prevent the pin from coming out of the keel slot. A whole bunch of "what ifs" isn't really worth worrying about, i don't think. Just check the pendant line and maybe grab the board and check the play in it, but I don't know what that will tell you. Check my Photo album under Trinkka for centerboard pics. Good luck with that 25. They're a great boat.

Have you considered that you bought the full version of the 25 and not the centerboard version???

Imagine, then you do not need to know anything about center boards.

Have you looked under the boat?

Yes, it has happened. A year or two ago in Florida. Imagine, loosing a lower appendage.

This is from when I was doing a blister repair on the CB but you can see how the pendant attaches to the CB with the shackle.

Here is a photo of the pendant attachment on my 26. As Joe said, he has some great pictures of the other parts. Never say never, but it is HIGHLY unlikely the cb would fall out if the line broke. If the parts were that worn, it would fall out whether the line was attached or not, IMHO.

By the way, how did the trip go?
