What do you do to clean the Rub Rails? Is there anything to put on them to protect them form the sun's damage?

Crazy Clean

Tried Crazy Clean a few weeks ago and it worked great. Acetone is not only highly flammable and a known carcinogen it may dissolve the surface layer of your rub rail. Use a cleaner, not a solvent.

Good question...

I tried Island Girl products on mine twice. The initial results were great but after 3-4 weeks they started to turn brownish again. Island Girl works great on lifelines though. The side of the boat that normally faces the sun is the worst, parts in the shade don't seem to be affected. In desperation I pulled out the big guns and tried acetone which also worked for a few weeks but is pretty nasty stuff. It does seem to be sun related though, maybe I need to rub sunscreen on the rub rails every morning? naahhh... Hopefully someone out there has a good tip!

Mary Kate Spray Away

Mary Kate Spray Away is available at West Marine. Its designed to clean inflatables and works great on the rub rais. They need cleaning every few months if exposed to the sun.

Westley's White Wall Cleaner

I have had great luck with Westley's White Wall cleaner....comes in various spray bottle sizes at the auto store. A guy at our marina gave me this tip a few years ago. Spray it on....let it sit for a couple minutes and then use your scrub brush lightly and most if not all marks will come right out. I also use it for those hard to clean bird "stains" and other hard stains on the deck that just will not come out. Now it does have a bleaching agent in this stuff, so you need to rinse the surfaces off well when you are finished......I have used this without fail when everything else short of solvents don't work.

Cleaning Rub Rail

I was the CFO for the company that made the rub rail for Hunter. I asked the manufacturing people and they didn't have a clue what to use. The rail is make out of flexable PVC. It is nothing special as far as the formulation. I agree that you should not use a solvent but use a PVC cleaner. A good coat of wax will also protect it.

PVC cleaner costs too much

The way I have found to be best to clean my rub rails is to use Purple Commercial Cleaner (available at Home Depot) in the spring for the first cleaning of the year, Wesley's Bleche White as a touch-up during the season and only resort to PVC cleaner for those small black marks that come from rubbing against pilings.

rub rail cleaning

Brian is right about using Purple - it works great. About equal, and also cheap is Greased Lightning
