What do you use on the topside to clean and polish? I have a 13 year old boat and the topside no longer has any "shine" to it. I wanted to polish it up but am concerned about the non-slip area becoming slippery. Someone said that 3M's cleaner/Wax was OK for the top side. What do you do?

Check the Gelcoat Forum

Check out the Gelcoat Forum's archives as this topic has been discussed quite a bit. I have heard nothing but extreme praise for Dr. Willis' Island Girl products. I've personally had luck with FSR, which is basically phosphoric acid in gel form but it's pretty caustic stuff. LaDonna

Don't think ANY traditional wax is OKAY!

Mickey: For general cleaning of the non-skid I have used the West Marine non-skid cleaner and it works good. If you want to seal it, Island Girl has some new sealer that you may want to try. I think that there is a product from Aurora that is made for the non-skid too. The real test of the non-skid is when the decks are awash and you are trying to work on deck.

Deck or top sides?

Mickey, To be accurate, the "top sides" are the top of the sides of the boat, or the vertical area above the waterline. Sometimes people figure the deck is included in this description because it is the "top" of the boat but it is not part of the "top sides". I sometimes clean the deck with some Soft Scrub and a brush. I have never waxed the deck but I have used marine cleaner/polish such as 3M or West Marine brands and I haven't noticed loosing any friction in footing. Chris

Topsides

For the non skid areas clean with Island Girl Poly Glow. The deck sealant they are working on is still a short time away due to lead times on some of the manufacturing components. Jim Willis does have some small samples (4 oz.) he will sell you for a couple of bucks if you want to try the deck sealer on a small area. For your smooth topsides, finish off with Silk and Seal. One of the guys on our dock did this to an older boat and it still looks great a year later. Visit the Island Girl web page and it should give you a good idea of what you need.

I used Both,

Hi, I used Island girl products on the topsides, finished all the vertical areas with Simply Brilliant by Island Girl and am very satisfied. The other product I used on the non skid was Aurora boat scrub cleaner, and finished the non skid areas with sure step by Aurora. The deck looks great, just today I got a sample of the new Island Girl non skid sealant, and will try it this weekend. Dood Luck! PS Aurora can be ordered online.

Assuming that you really mean the topsides. A search of the Forum Archives will locate many testimonials to both Poli-Glow and Island Girl. See Poli-Glow link.
