What Do You Think?

Saw a 1971 Catalina 22 on trailer for $2900. Has never been in salt water, strictly inland sailing. Never sailed before but want to try before old bones give out. My daughter is the "sailor". What should we look for? Was last surveyed in 1995 for second owner and "passed with flying colors". Does not appear to be abused, no blistering etc. Stored out of water since at least 1995. Seems like a chance to have a good substantial craft for a low price. Help?

Look around a Little More

Jack: This could be a good deal, but look around a little more. A 1971 is a little old, not so much in years, but in features that were added to the later boats. I don't think that the 71's had a front hatch, Pop-Top, or the bigger cross section mast. I think that these features would be worth paying an addition $1000. I can't even begin to explain the difference it makes sleeping in the boat with the front hatch. The pop-top is nice, and the bigger mast is a saftey item, in my opinion. So look at several Catalina 22s and make your decision. (We still enjoy ours tremendously after 20 years). One more thing, before you buy any boat, you should think about whether you would have a difficulty selling that boat. A '71 could be much harder to sell than a newer boat. Aldo

Keep Looking

Jack, I'm with Aldo. Keep looking and I'm sure you will find something better. Maybe for less money. I bought a 1976 C22 with almost all the safety upgrades for $2200 with trailer. The trailer is kinda rotten, but the only thing I changed on the boat was the bow eye to the two prong type. Good Hunting, Jay Beery

A bit pricey

Jack, 2900 seems high for a 73. Around here (South Jersey) they're going for about a grand, though what you get makes tons of difference, of course. I'd say keep looking. Just for reference, I know of two Catalina 22's, both 1977, that are going for about $2500. Rob

Hard to say

I have a 71' hull #1281 and I love it. No front hatch - my wife and I love to lay out on the bow and where the hatch is located it would prohibit this or make it uncomfortable. Smaller mast section - because of the smaller mast section it is lighter and therefore the older boats are almost always faster than the new ones. No pop top - mine is a pop top and the one that you are looking at is most likely as well (you will want a pop top) $2900 sounds a little steep but we dont know anything about your boat - condition, outboard, sails etc. I've seen much newer boats than mine that I would never trade for. If you want to discuss specifics with a owner of a vintage c-22 email me at tpctahoe@aol.com Good luck, Tim Cobb c-22 "mauna makani" #1281 Tahoe Keys, Lake Tahoe

Deep Creek Lake

$ 2,900.00 for a cat 22' 71 here in California , never in the ocean sails and running and standing rigging in good shape. I'd buy it. Then if I were in MD I would trailer it to Deep Creek lake near Oakland and have a ball. It was alst surveyed in 95 and no apparent physical problems then buy it. If you had a boat that sat at the dock in the water all those years then start looking for water damage, rot, delamination, but from what you describe it sounds like a really good deal. Happy Sailing , and Welcome :) Dave LaPere
