If you read the OP you will note I asked, "how much is my fault" I did not ask, "was I at fault"? Of course I was at fault, the question was how much.
merg, now you're really splitting hairs. The answers, most of them, seem to say 100%. This is becoming one of those: if you don't like the answers stop asking the same question kinda thing.

No one is at Fault

This is one of those cases where no one is at fault. If any blame was levelled on any of the participants in this event then they may have psychological scarring for life and therefore we don't want their feelings to be hurt or in any way inconvenienced. I think it best for all concerned if you call up your mother (aka federal government) and ask for a bailout of the 700 bucks. The government will save it all in diminished health care expenses.

Here is How I Look at It.

First, the captain is at fault no matter who is at the helm or who gave directions.

Second, the person who should pay for the tow is the one most concerned with getting the boat back to the slip.
