So a friend got all new standing rigging over the winter for her boat. She just pulled them out of the bag. What is the general opinion of the swage fitting.

i think it’s bogus.

Not a good swage because of the bend. Whether it left the rigging shop that way or was damaged in transit, is another issue. Rather than assume the rigger didn't know what he was doing, I'd contact the rigger and explain the situation.

Rigging Only in Fairhaven MA replaced all of my rigging over the years. Good work, reasonable prices, and nice people to work with.

@NYSail I'm not sure what you mean by "bogus"...

Bogus: not genuine or true; fake.

But if that's a brand new swag fitting, it was not properly manufactured. Or it was damaged in shipping. How long ago did she get them? You could have a problem if it's been some time...

In 47 years of sailboat ownership, I have never seen a fitting that looked like that. As kwe all now, normally the wire is swagged to a fitting which mates with a similar fitting threaded connection into the turnbuckle. Not even mentioning the bend. Looks like junk to me.

Her problem is now defending the position that this is how they arrived. It depends upon how the person that made these wants to handle this.

Hey,

I am not qualified to offer an opinion on this.

I wonder how the swage will look once it's connected and tensioned. Is is possible that it needs tension to straighten out?

Hey Barry,

im not an engineer but I don’t think we want to see the swage deflect under pressure.

see you soon in the harbor!!

So my friend called the rigger and he is refunding her money. He can’t do new ones though for her……. ******* but actually I don’t think I would want him to do my work at all….. who knows what other flaws there would be.

thanks all

I have never built rigging before, but I have done brake lines and hydraulic hoses for many different applications. I know for a fact that there are different pressure settings for different sizes, and if those are not followed the crimps will fail. This goes for too much pressure as well as too little. I imagine the same is true with swage, and the bends would tell me too much pressure and thus weakening the joint.

On a day I was out, a co-worker made a hose for a forklift and didn’t change the tonnage setting on the press. I had it set for a much smaller hose which is a much higher pressure. This caused the rings inside the fitting to cut too deep into the hose and it blew out in only 48 hours. Thankfully no one was hurt and the load was not damaged, but the guy operating the forklift got oiled. I remade the hose for free of course and held another training course for the other guys making hoses.
