What kind of material do you put under you at night? Have you stayed with your original closed-cell foam cushion? Replaced it with a newer, firmer version of the same? Did you switch to an inner-spring mattress, or perhaps get one with your new boat? Have you experienced a night on a Latex mattress, which many sailors claim to be the best on board? Share your firm positions on bedding, then vote in the Quick Quiz at the bottom of the home page.

Original foam, plus.

We have added the one inch pads with holes, I think from Homeplace. Improves comfort and allows for air circulation under the mattress.

Original + also

We have the original foam plus we place a couple therm-a-rest sleeping pads underneath which makes a world of difference.

Added extra for ventilation

We added 'Ventair 15' under the original cushions - has improved comfort and eradicated moisture/condensation problems

SLEEPING

As a live aboard,I never had any problem with the foam mattress on my 38 ft trawler and assumed the same when we bought a new 450 in 99 that came with a 7" regular mattress in both cabins. At first we heated with electric hearers[Freeport was only 7 cts per kilowatt] however when I took a suit out of the locker the sleeve was all mildewed as everything else in all lockers. When we looked at the mattresses they were wet on the outside. The next was to put in a Webasco oil fired heating system [$11,000.00].Two zones are controled by thermostats, and two zones, 1 port and 1 starboard that run up and down all closets, under bunks and couches and floor that run when ever either of the thermostatically [whaw, thats a big sunday word]controlled zones are running. The heat is great and the condensation has almost been eliminated axcept for a few minor areas and lockers that are too packed to allow circulation. The one problem is that I always seach for a cold spot when I am in bed.My next boat and girlfriend I am going to put the heat on her side of the bed.Boy I really used some big words,I must have had ABCDEFGHIJ[cant spell alphabet]soup for lunch, with a dictionary desert.

Use Waffle Pad

Originally we had problems with moisture buildup between the mattress and the plywood underneath. After a nights sleep we’d brace the mattresses up so they could air out but this was really arduous, there had to be a better solution. Like the previous posters, we subsequently added a waffle pad (very inexpensive, around $10 or $15) underneath the original mattress and the moisture problem has for all practical purposes disappeared. Also, the mattress feels a little cushier. No need to prop up the mattress. I like what one person said about their solution for ventilation and that was to remove the plywood and install some cedar battens. This would eliminate the need for the waffle pad and provide superior ventilation. Our area runs approximately 70 percent humidity, more or less, so that’s a factor also. What works for us on the west coast might work as well on the east coast, but it should help.

Mattress

An inner spring mattress. Makes living aboard more comfortable. Regarding an earlier post about condensation, we keep a hatch cracked and never have a problem unless we shut the boat up hurricane-tight.

Sleep?.....

...What a novel idea. With a 8,6 and 2 1/2 year sleeping aboard is trying. However once they do fall asleep my wife and I are so tired we can sleep on a "bed of nails"...

New High Density Foam

Last year we purchased a new, high density foam mattress to replace an old foam mattress that I was beginning to bottom out on. The new mattress took a bit of getting used to, but now it's as comfortable as at home.

The one imporvement we're making this spring

is a new innerspring mattress. At 6'3" 200# the factory 4" foam is killing my back if we stay on board over a couple of nights at a time.

Handcraft Mattress

I had Handcraft mattress make a custom queen sized mattress for our H380, with a special fold so we can use the storage areas underneath without disturbing the bed. Expensive but well worth it in my opinion. Bob Knott H380

OEM mattress is fine..

althought it's not as comfortable as the "pillowtop" mattress I have at home. The OEM inner spring mattress that came with our 460 works just fine!

O'DAY OEM is great!

The builders must have been looking out for us - the cushions on an O'DAY are the thickest in the industry! I've never had less than a perfect nights' sleep on board and I'm sure the thick cushions have a lot to do with it!

Therm_A-Rest

Our H26 foam cushion was showing signs of collapsing under certain portions of my body. I didn’t want to consume to much height in a thicker mattress and loose head room. Could of gone to a higher density foam – but didn’t want the work to re-cover. So… I purchased two “Therm-A-Rest” self-inflating 1” pads. I’ve slept on these in the past camping, and they are unbelievably comfortable. I just put those under the existing foam pads – and it works great.

I sleep on

We found it desirable to replace the mattress on our 1987 Hunter Legend 37 with a new 5" foam one. It is very comfortable. Who wants to sleep on a matress that is 13 years old whose prior owner had a dog? It does put our face in the floor of the cockpit, but, hay, we dopnn't think of the clostrofobia.

In response to bedding quiz.

I live part time on the El Delphin, she gets scold and the those those 3" Foam cushions are not that comfortable. But QVC came to the rescue. Northern Nights feather bed and down comfeter, super warm and the feather bed gives an amazing amount of extra cush. It was the best $150.00 ever spent.

I oughta try it...

Reverse your Sleep Position

John, I also have a Hunter Legend 37 ,1988. My wife and I find we have more headroom by sleeping with our heads towards the bow. The matress is only 6 inches narrower but now we have more leg room. Barrie
