What do you expect from your marina

Hello All, As kind of a newbie, only one season, I've re-upped with the same marina. But I wonder what other boaters expect for thier money. Example: The marina where our dealer was puts all boats in the water with foam between the travel lift straps and hull... No Scratches! Mine scratched the S#$T out of my boat! The place is ok, but not exactly a "nice" marina. Respect for other peoples property might be nice... I look down the bay and see some marina's that are first class... Is it worth the extra money? Regards, Chris

MOVE!

Chris: I believe the care a marina takes when moving your boat to/from the water is indicative of the overall type of operation they have. If they don't care about scratching your hull, they may not care about stand maintenance, equipment upkeep, etc. Some boat owners may not care or are more concerned about saving $$ than quality handling of their boat. By posting your question I get the feeling you are not one of them. If it were me, I'd find another marina and encourage everyone else at that yard to do the same. The owner will get the hint! By the way, unless your state is different than VA, I believe your marina is responsible for damage (cosmetic or otherwise) to your boat when they are hauling. I'd talk to your insurance company. agree with moving

it sounds like you're not comfortable at your marina. why stay? scratched boat? unless you're slipping for free why put up with substandard service and inconsiderate dockmates? let your money do the walking - your initial impression of this marina is as good as it gets, and it'll never get this good again.

Marinas in RI

I too have a slip in RI. In general, the people are friendly and easy to get along with. In fact, last year, they mistakenly put my sailboat on poppets (spelling?) instead of its cradle. When I pointed out the mistake, they corrected it within a week. One thing to remember is that marinas are a business and they tend to take on that attitude at times. Sometime the timing is off (too many boats to launch or haul at any given time) or whatnot. It may be late now, but try to talk to the yard manager to see if you have any luck. Also, remember that in RI, boating has been booming and most marinas have waiting lists. So if you are planning on moving, it might be a nice idea to get a slip somewhere else before leaving where you are. Regards, Mike Beaujean "Timeless Flight"

Moving

Thanks Mike, I wouldn't move unless I had a place to go. For me I wouldn't make threats about moving, I'd find a new place and just go at the end of the year. I like places that re-invest into the facilities. Clean working bathrooms and showers, and trades that care about the quality of work they do. Quality docks are a good start. Our marina builds thier own docks and do it poorly. They don't put a rail down the side of the dock and the boards are all different lenghts. It's all jagged ! I had to put rubber down the dock myself to protect the boat. They don't put on any cleats, just 4X4 wood corner posts, which puts your stern lines on an 80 degree angle and liable to pull off in heavy storm conditions. I looked at a lot of places, and got on thier lists, I took this place because they were available. Then I got calls from the other places about having slips available, but I was committed. I'll be looking this year for a place to go in the fall. Regards, Chris

Check out Edgewood Yacht Club

Chris, Check out the Edgewood Yacht Club. That is in your neiborhood and they offer slips and storage. We are over in Bristol and keep our boat on a mooring from Bristol Yacht Club. I store my boat next door at the Bristol Marine yard. Others use Brewer's or there is another yard up in Barrington that is popular and does a good job. Just some options for you. cole

which marina

Go ahead and dish about the marina that you dont like. ie: who they are, where the are. It seems you have many issues with them. You may save another sailor some ag by giving them a heads up. I did about the Carraige? House in monmouth NJ and feeeeeel great about it. That jerk lance(the owner) shoved it up my youknow what. Just because i was stuck behind another boat It cost me another months rent and i wasnt in the water.I love to tell others about it in hopes that one day he will collide with my bad Karma.

do tell

Cole, I understand your methods, and agree, but I'm still there. There is a shortage of slips in narragansett bay. When I'm out I'll be more than glad to spill the beans. Regards, Chris

Chris have you considered

Have you thought about a Yacht club? I just resigned from the Quaker City YC in Phila to move to Raleigh NC. I really do miss the comraderie and you cant beat the price to keep my C30. The facility had a club house with a bar and travel lift and all kinds of equipment to help you with your boat. I found that the people make up the club and truely miss all the fine members there. The wealth of info is astounding. and beer is cheap. good luck. Its a scientific fact: Cussing really helps cole
