What do you call this?

Hello all,
This is my first time on this forum. I call this item (see attachment) a stanchion cover but could not find any replacement parts on this site searching by stanchion or covers, so I'm trying to find out what this is called and where I can get it. I didn't think that this item would be specific to my boat. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for putting me right on it Wayne.

Another question- I need to replace my bottom lifeline on the starboard side. I've been looking at the lifeline and don't know exactly how it comes together. It appears to be stranded wired with vinyl on the outside of it. It has a piece of turnbuckle hardware on one end and a piece of toggle hardware on the other end. (see pic)

Is this something I can buy as one whole piece, or do I have to buy it in pieces and put it together?

I also just ordered new lifeline cushions. I'm unclear on how to take the turnbuckle off so that I can put the cushions on the lifeline.

Again, any help is appreciated.
Ken

Your lifeline has a swaged stud that threads into the pelican hook at the end. (Not a turnbuckle.)

Loosen the nut where the stud goes into the pelican hook. Then, unscrew using the knurled knob encased in the pelican hook body. When the stud is threaded all the way out, the knurled knob will come out of the pelican hook body.

To replace, you should NOT use the vinyl covered wire. Go up a size and just use SS wire. The vinyl covering can cause corrosion in the SS wire, and you can't see it, until it breaks. Anything that cuts off air to SS will lead to corrosion - it's one of the metals in the alloy that forms an oxide layer that protects the steel from rusting.

You can buy a swaging tool, and the studs you need, from CS Johnson http://www.csjohnson.com. There have been articles on replacing life lines in Good Old Boat magazine over the past year. Contact them to order a backissue CD with the correct issue.
