???there are so many products out there on the market and as a novice would love to hear which products you've had the most success with. In particular, products for cleaning non-skid decks and just general boat exterior cleaning and polishing products. what have you tried and liked and what have you not liked?

Here's some of the things I use

C.U. which can be bought on this website is great as a boat wash. Takes the grime off. If there is a stain that may be alittle harder to get off, Castrol Super Clean works well. These two items seem to clean everything safely. Roc

Simple Green

We have had fantastic results using a product called "Simple Green." It's biodegadeable, safe for the environment, will produce enough but not too much suds. Available in marine stores, hardware stores and even some grocery stores. We've used it inside and out for cleaning.

Island Girl Products

Check out the Island Girl product line. Expensive but worth it (and I'm a cheapskate)!

Toilette bowl cleaner

Cheap, breaks-down simply. Great for decks with bird droppings, dust, mildew, grime, oil. Squirt on, scrub lightly with brush, let sit for 10 minutes, and then scrub again and rinse---it'll blind you with the difference.

stainless steel

Use BarKeepers Friend for cleaning the "rust" from stainless steel. Works great, is cheap and it's available in the cleaning section of most super markets, next to Comet and BonAmi.

re: toilet bowl cleaner

Be carefull with that stuff, it's acid based and toxic. I use the industrial type bowl cleaner to remove algae from my trailerable Nacra's hulls, but it doesn't work very well for oil based stains. I would not use it on my marina docked Cat 27, however, because of local environmental concerns. Check your area's environmental regs before you use it.

Try Soft Scrub

The regular Soft scrub seems to clean/bleach the decks a little better than the Jel, but then the Jel has less residue and rinses off easier. I usually use the regular for the first clean-up in the spring, then continue with the jel for the rest of the season. Using a soft brush helps maintain the finish and letting the cleaner go full strength on stubborn stains like spider residue works extremely well. Dribbleing it around & then adding light water to dilut and then speading it around to soak & bleach the white for a while before scrubbing really works well & minimizes the elbow grease.

Best and Easiest Cleaning Products

We use "Starbrite Black Streak Remover" to scrub the decks...it will not harm wax. You can use it full strength or dilute to suit your needs. The best stainless cleaner we have found is "Collinite's 850 Metal Wax". I have repetitive motion problems in my hands, wrists, & arms and this cleaner/wax is very easy to use.

Aurora Boat Scrub & Aurora Sure Step

We have found and use Aurora Boat Scrub for the non-skid areas. Then we apply Aurora Sure Step as a wax/protectorant on the non-skid. The Sure Step was evaluated by Practical Sailor an rated very well. You don't gain traction with Sure Step, but you don't lose it either. Both are available at Boater's World. I also second the recommendation of Collanite 850 Stainless polish. Regards, Dick C. S/V Puffin H-33.5
