What can of worms have I opened and jumped into?

Probably gonna hate me for this. . . I just bought a 76 Oday 20. The boat has not been in the water for 10 years and needs Lots of tlc. I, being a landlubber (although growing up in a seacoast town and around boats) have no idea where to start this project. To date, I have insured the project, secured a mooring as well as off season storage and am not sure whether to sail/tow (with my brothers boat) up the coast (about 30 miles) or to have someone trailer the boat to its mooring. Ideas, input, advice (shy of getting out before I get in too dee) would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to long hours of sweat equity leading to joining you all on the water. Great way to learn the boat

Jerry,I would find a sailor that is acomplished to accompany you on your trip. The trip is a one day sail/ motor. That 30 miles with someone that is somewhat knowledgable could be valuable to you.If you can't find a boat owner, there are many guys out there that crew that would be knowledgeable enough the make the trip. Ask some owners/racers at your mooring area and pick someone with good references and a knowledge of the trip you must make.This trip could show you some of the areas you need to work on. Float the boat to make sure there are no major leaks, and check your rigging to make sure it is safe for the trip. r.w.landau

Been there done that

I bought a 74 O'day 20 in May that had been in a garage for 15 years. I trailered it 95 miles to my home, put it in my driveway and had a professional marine inspector come out and look at the boat($120). I launched it with an experienced friend, took a test sail to find the problems, pulled it and fixed those problems. This was about a four launch process (with great sailing of course) before we had major problems solved (broken centerboard, holes left unplugged when motor mount moved, etc.) It was great for learning the boat as I have crawled in, around and under the boat.I still have one small leak but will take care of that this winter.Bill - Cwyalie@Oakweb.com
