What are these things?

I was rooting through my lockers and came upon 2 short lines of different length each with a brass shackle at both ends. At first I thought they had something to do with the reefing (2 things, 2 reef points, why not?) but they did not fit in any fashion. Does anyone have any idea what these things may be? The PO obviously spent a decent amount of time and money to put them together. All wisdom welcome. Thanks...Steve

My best guess is that they are "pennants". I used a devise such as those because the tack of my jib would not reach the deck when the sail was at full hoist.

Don. Thanks for the input. My Genoa is on a roller and I can't visualize how that would attach. It looks as if I need to get your book.

Apparently they are left over from when the PO had hank ons. I use one of those myself on my 110% jib to raise it off the deck for visibility.

they could also be lashings for the shore power cord to secure them to the life lines...they have several uses

I use similar rigs:

- to attach the tack of my genoa to the boat (so I have forward vision under the genoa)
- as a ghetto method of adjusting the length of my topping lift
- hold my boom over to one side when not sailing
- hold my boom centered when not sailing
- as safety leashes for my outboard motor, tiller/rudder, gunwhale-hook swim ladder

Ahhh yes, a piece of rope with snap hooks on the ends. Best invention ever made.......with millions of uses :)

Test splices are great for things like this as long as you leave a couple of feet of line at the end. Kills 2 birds at once.
