Real Costs and Counting

I purchased a '88 H33.5 approximately 3 1/2 years ago. I have spent about $10K on maintenance and improvements as follows: Year 1 ($5K)-- Barrier coat, sand blast and coal tar epoxy keel, anti fouling paint, 16K btu AC/Heat,re- finish exterior teak, repaired leak in rudder. Year 2 ($3K)-- Compression post replacement, refinish cabin sole, replace lifelines, rebuild head, upgraded bilge pump, installed Nicro solar ventilation, replaced VHF, installed stereo and speakers. Year 3 ($2K)--Haul out for bottom bottom maint., replaced batteries with AGM batteries, replaced charger with statpower smart charger, Norcold AC/DC refrig. AND Counting ($?)--need to replace speed & depth instruments, replace canvas, clean and maintenance on sails, maintenance on Yanmar including clean/replace mix elbow, clean heat exchanger, replace therm- ostat, add temp&oil pressure guages, possibly fabricate anchor roller and install windlass, possibly replace cockpit and interior upholstery---- and finally routine maintenance!

As many answers as owners. . . .

is what you might get here. And I wonder how many answers you will see since it makes a person think about the costs. Do we really want to add that up? Owners of new boats have the "mortgage" plus insurance and marina fees. I have no payments but lots of upgrade projects plus the same insurance and marina fees. Then it depends upon planned use. Since I want to take my 1979 H37C offshore my upgrades are going to be more than if I stayed on Lake Erie($2000. for bronze ports for example). So for this one old sailor with one old boat for each of the last two seasons: Insurance and marina = $3300., maintenance and upgrades = $4000(but that will end:).

I agree with Ed

I agree with Ed wholeheartedly. Although costs certainly are a factor and shouldn't be totally ignored, you'll get lots of different responses from different folks who view their boats differently. If we allow ourselves to get TOO objective about these machines, I think we'd all sell 'em and take up walking.!!!! I owned a H28 and recently purchased a new H340. I know all my costs are going to go up incrementally but that's the choice we made for more room, comfort, stability. I'll pay the bills and smile every time I look at the boat.

Lambert, Count the Intangibles, too.

Some of mine in 30 years: 1. Close, intimate family time. 2. Learned painting and varnishing. 3. Kept me out of the bars when single. 4. Good cardiovascular exercise. 5. Can tell weather and feel windshifts. 6. Learned to sew canvas and dacron. 7. An hour away from a huge city. 8. Learned electrical and mechanical. 9. Gained adventure, defeated fear. 10.Had something to share with friends. Not a bad investment, overall. Lambert: what I have found over the years, and what is probably the best rule: prioritize boating within your life and spend as little or as much as you can afford. Good luck, RD

About $8000 per year

Major expenses for my '88 35 (annualized for 2000) o Marina slip $3100 o Insurance: $1200 o Monthly bottom cleaning: $600 o New mainsail: $1800 o Engine work: $400 Rest is regular maintenance - gas, cleansers, fixing things (bilge pump, water pump, paints & varish, etc. Not including the hours and hours of personal time spent fixing, improving, maintaining. Not a casual hobby unless you are very wealthy.

Don't Give it a Second Thought ..........

You simply CANNOT rationalize the expences on your new boat or you will quickly come to the conclusion you did the wrong thing. I figure it costs me $thousands$ every time I pull away from the dock. However, when I look back at the memories ....................... Regards, s/v Island Hunter

A late addition

I spent $13,000 on a 77 h27, including the two new sails I added to the locker. $2,300 covers insurance, docking, haul out, storage, and putting her back in the water. Other costs probably came up to $1,500 to $2,000, including some do-it-myself upgrades and maintenance, diesel engine rescue and maintenance, and 10 nights at other marinas. We spent those 10 nights on the Lady Lillie, and our GPS says we logged 450 nautical miles of actual sailing. Finally, there are all the hours of getting ready, planning, and maintenance which I really enjoy! Seems like abargain to me!

h34 in Your Neighborhood

In seven years upkeep and upgrades on my h34 totaled over $29,000 not counting the initial purchase price. A big part of it is dock space ($2000/yr), hauling and storage ($700/yr), insurance ($165/yr). Then add two rudders, two sails, autopilot, dodger, refigeration, inverter, CQR anchor, .... Good thing I'm not keeping this vessel or it would have been much more. If I include beer it goes way over $30k Barry
