I work part time in a place which sells used marine gear on consignment. One day someone brought in some items to sell. He mentioned that he was from someplace in British Columbia. Stuart Island I think it was. I asked him where that was and after some explanation he said that it was near Yaculta Rapids. A voice came from the back of the store " I have a good friend who lost his boat there ". The seller said " was it a trawler? " " No, it was a fishing boat." the voice replied. " Yeah, it was a 40 foot trawler. Caught in a whirlpool in 14 knots of current - sucked the boat under the water in a whirlpool." The voice replied " It was in 1996. He was rescued by a fellow in a Boston Whaler." The seller said " that was me. He was sitting in my living room dripping wet after we pulled him out. He was SOOO lucky. "As it turned out, the community there had taken up a collection for this guy as he had lost everything in the boat. He went back to the states and eventually earned enough money to return there and repay everyone. He bought another boat and has gone cruising again. Neither of these guys knew where he is now but I won't be surprised if someone here will come up with that. Please be advised that the story is true but some of the more specific information here like the boat length and year is not guaranteed exactly right as it is what I remember from a few months ago. What are the chances of these two people meeting each other and finding all of this out? Remote - I think. Maybe I should get a lottery ticket.
