Beckwith Island

is owned by the Native Indians and is uninhabited. They charge you camping fees to stay ashore. Its next to Christian Island ( Gordan Lightfoot's " In the lea of Christian Island" ) This bay is several hundred yards out with a depth of 15 feet. Water is clear blue and sandy bottom. Easy to set the Rocna. Day previous we were in 3 ft. seas 30 knot winds and ended up motoring into a head wind for an hour to get there before too late.

You are fortunate...

the weather was good Sunday and Monday. Memorial weekend in Maine can get pretty nasty. The God's were with you!

Weekends Like This One Was

are what sailing is made for. We spent it up on the Mobjack Bay and dropped the hook just inside the mouth of the Ware River. Winds were delightful, anywhere from 13 to 14 knots up to the upper teens. With the sails trimmed properly, it made for a very enjoyable sail. Was having too much fun to get the pics though, opps, maybe next time.

WE had a great weekend!!! Saturday we moved around slow until a couple hours before dark and then had great sailing. Sunday was something of a let down for sailing but we anchored and swam and the water temperature was near perfect and the fishermen in our family really liked the calm weather for fishing. Then Monday was really windy. Near hull speed until it was time to pack and go home. The wind even cooperated while we were docking ...well it didn't stop blowing but there were no gusts at critical moments. Only down side was I got sunbuurned while swimming....it is easy to forget the sun while swimming!!!!

Great weekend on the Chesapeake

One of the few advantages to high fuel prices......85% of the boats on the bay were sailboats. Very few powerboats out, especially on Sunday. I think they got to where they were going and stayed there instead of zipping all over the bay.

Monday on the Bay was a wild one

I sailed out of the Coan River in the Potomac and rounded Smith point. Eventually the winds came up to 15-20. Sailing in 15 upwind with my small jib wasn't bad but the 20 was a bit much. I made it all the way to Deltaville. We had actually logged over 60 miles upwind on that day (not a bad day). I think that I passed by Java on Monday. He was going North and I was going South. A friend who was with me told me that he tried to hail me on VHF but I was tied to the helm (single handing it) and I couldn't trust the auto pilot with the wind and waves. Sorry I didn't get to talk with you and hope that you had a good weekend. Tomorrow I am heading south again. Should be good weather with the winds out of the North. It is a bit warm today and I think that some storms are coming.

No...

Quote: "I thought you would be busy watching your new TV. Sorry, but I just couldn't resist." No but my nephew did on the sail home. We were on port tack and the TV is on the STBD bulkhead so he just snuggled into the STBD settee and had a Thomas The Train fest while we enjoyed the sail above decks.. It really kept him from getting cranky and let us enjoy a great sail which was the whole point....!
