The day started fine. Sun shinning, light winds, couldn't ask for a much more perfect day. So the wife and I go out, not to sail but to test the Seaclear software with my GPS. So basically it was a day of motoring. We weren't gonna go far, just up the lane maybe a mile or so and back. On the say up, I noticed no water stream coming from my outboard. Plus, there was a lot of exhaust smoke. I grabbed a toothpick to clean out the pee hole but all that was coming out was very hot air. And I mean HOT! I actually think it was steam, the unseen type because it was really hot. So I pull the lanyard to shut down the engine. I tried to continue to clean out the hole but now water is dripping out, and it was HOT! So I try to restart the motor to head back in and I can budge to pull line. It will not move. Now we are drifting toward the mud flats. It was high tide, no wind to speak of, and drifting. My wife saw a motor boat coming so I flagged him down. Told him my problems and asked for a tow back to the marina. No problems he says. Half way back, I noticed the motor was still in gear. So I put it in neutral and the motor started. We untied from his boat and he waved bye and left. I offered $10 but he refused. Nice guy. So we make it back to the slip where I started to dismantle the cooling hoses. The water was flowing but not very well. I back flushed a little and then the flow increased and the water was cold. Now, the day is ruined and I need to do more repair work on my motor. I think what I want to do is remove all the cooling hoses and back flush each water outlet port. I might even use a little bit of compressed air, but not a lot. So anyway, one of the ills of year round sailing is not having any down time for maintenance. I envy you east coast guys with your "on the hard" time.

Envy

Brian- Are you serious, envy towards us guys that are climate challenged. Catch a flight out here (WI) tonight and feel what -16 does to your envious thoughts. Their is not a guy that has his boat up on blocks thats not dreaming of spring. I hope all is well with the iron genny. Stay warm. Rob

I ditto That

Sorry to hear about that Brian...But your on the water...I could be to in the power boat but I just cant get into it any more...I'm still 6 weeks from launch and it is really starting to bug me. I cant stop thinking about it. Crap happens unfortunately I think your bummer of a day is clowding your thinking. It's been blowin rain sideways for 3 months here and Im sick of it.*cry....So hang in there and lick your wounds for a couple days then go down to the boat and enjoy tinkering on it in the good weather you have ....something we cant even do.

About that blockage

My neighbor had the same problem on his fishing boat trolling motor. The mechanic told him that the small hose that leads the water out of the case is a great place for bugs to crawl into as the winter comes on then they die in there and clog the outlet line. He said we could try blowing into the line with an air compressor just after starting the engine. Worked great, one shot of air pressure and some junk came out and no more problem. I understand it is a good thing to check at the beginning of each season. Bob V

It was not my intent...

to rub it in. I merely envy the people who can work on their on boats while they are out of the water. The boat yard near me will not allow that. Basically, that sucks! And so does not having the weather to sail in. My apologies. Bob, blowing out the lines is a good idea. That was also one of the things I was thinking of doing. Thanks

There are a couple of DIY yards up here but most

of them want $40 per day. The only two that ask $175 per month are full until Spring. It kinda sucks when ya have stuff to do requiring a haul out around here.

What?

so your motor needs to be cleaned out. Big deal! Even if it blow out, big deal. It is only an outboard. You could put a new on for $1200, peanuts!

check your impeller

make sure your impeller is good or change it while you do your hoses. I feel bad for the guys up north I like the option of going out every day and don't mind setting aside down time. Be real this is great if any one should have envy its the guys with all that white stuff on their boats on the hard! BTW...came down here 25 years ago what is that white stuff again? ;)

Anchor Down

Impelled to Stop

Brian said in orig. post: "…one of the ills of year round sailing is not having any down time for maintenance." *** *** *** We all have to do maintenance, and there are two kinds: SCHEDULED, and UNSCHEDULED. It's the second type that disrupts our plans. We all drink from that well. We all know you're grateful for a year-round sailing season (I know I am). Hey, sounds like a simple problem, but I second the idea that as long as you're there, change the impellor and fluids (reduces the chance of more UNSCHEDULED maintenance ruining another beautiful day. Brian originally posted: "…one of the ills of year round sailing is not having any down time for maintenance." *** *** *** We all do two kinds of maintenance: SCHEDULED, and UNSCHEDULED. Being conscientious about the former tends to reduce instances of the latter. Bri, sounds like a small problem to have, and we all identify with our plans being "altered" by a mechanical failure. And we know you're grateful for a year-round sailing season. I agree with the idea that as long as you're there, changing the impellor and fluids, if it's been a year, is a smart idea: being thorough when you're doing SCHEDULED maintenance tends to reduce the instances of UNSCHEDULED maintenance.
