Whale Gusher foot pump

We have a Whale Gusher foot pump for the fresh water intake at the sink
that has broken loose from its mounting for the second time since we
installed it. The problem is that without taking the sink countertop
off, there is limited access to get four screws into the block on which
it is mounted. How have other folks dealt with this problem? Thanks
for any suggestions.

Hello,

I've just done it, on my Vega, the pumps are mounted on a board, so you
unscrew the board and take it out of under the sink with the pump still on
it and after you can work on the pump.

Ok I will try to explain that simple concept with my french-english...

There are some wood block that are screwed in the fiber glass and the board
is screwed on those block. Because I can remove the board and take it out
from under the sink (I mean completly out) I can disconnect all the hose and
take the board with the pump home if I want so there is all the space I need
to work on the pump...I suggest you have a closer look, take some picture
inside to see how the pump are fixed because at the beginning I tought like
you that is was impossible until I realized that instead of unscrewing the
pump I could unscrew the board, Hope this is understandable and that it will
help you a bit...

I've put the same pump I had previously so a Whale III foot pump

Hi Paul and Melanie,

The block that my water pumps were mounted on seemed to be permanently fixed and the mounting holes on one of the pumps were too worn to hold any more. So what I did was to mount the offending pump on an aluminum plate with long pop rivets in the original mounting spots of the pump and then I was able to mount the plate with screws that were in places that were easier to get at. That was this spring and so it has worked out fine.

I am thinking about a traveler upgrade for the Vega. I am currently considering the Harken Mid-Range Traveler kit and was wondering if anyone has this system currently, if anyone would recommend this system or any other, and if this system will fit the Vega. The track is 4' long and I can't remember how wide the T-Track is??? Does anyone know or have the dimensions of the original mainsheet traveler track? I know that there is a little wiggle room there, but not much and I don't want the cars to strike the sides of the traveler channel.

Thanks
Chris

Hi Chris, We installed a Harken Kit and like it. We did have to raise it up
a bit and did so with a teak board underneath. It worked out well. Walt

Oh great!

Did you raise it up for the cars? The cars on the unit that I am considering look pretty beefy, and I imagine that I will have to raise up the track as well, though Harken, Lewmar, Schaefer and Garhaur all make the raised T-tracks of various heights, so I may go that route!

Thanks Walt!

I've just upgraded the Traveler on our Vega with the Size 1 Lewmar Traveler Kit. It fits perfectly and comes with all the hardware for a 4-1 purchase. The only thing about it is that it requires that you either supply M5 SS bolts (hidden fasteners) or what I did was to grind 1/4 bolts to make it work. I was able to reuse the old bolt holes and with no visible fasteners, it looks very slick. Very strong and one of the best upgrades one could do to make sailing our Vega more enjoyable.

I still need to figure out how to make the control line work. Anybody else on the list have of one these?

Cedric,

I just looked into those, and they look very nice. 4:1 sounds perfect. Where did you buy your traveler? I have found some at West, Defender and pyacht.com...all about the same price.

Thanks for the info
Will try to get a closer look at these unites first hand on Wednesday

I outfitted our Sabre 28' with a Garhauer Boom Vang and the thing was incredible, great price, custom fitted and ruggedly built. I am looking into two of their Traveler Units as well....competitively priced and a name that has gained my trust over the years.
