Whale Galley Pump

I have water backing up into my icebox on an 89 Catalina 30. The boat was ordered with the optional pump for overboard dishcharge of the icebox. I assume the Whale MK III foot pump is there for this purpose. It looks like the drain goes into one inlet of the foot pump, and the discharge goes out where the galley sinks drain. Does this sound correct, or is there another thru-hull. We really do not use the ice box for cold storage, but would like to store paper goods without the fear of everything getting soaked. The foot pump does not spring back once depressed so I would assume it is shot. I know Whale makes a re-build kit, but $70.00 I could just replace. I just want to be sure that the pump is the problem before shelling out the money. The reason I am even posting is that I remember reading that some have complained that on occassion when on port tack they have water backing up into their icebox. Why spend the money if the problem will just occur again with or without the repair.

There may be a valve on the line from icebox

before it enters the sink drainline. If this valve is closed foot pump will not work, when open (if sink drain line thru hull open) it may be possible to get some water in sink. Also if thru hull closed and icebox valve open, water from sink may drain into icebax.

galley pump Mk3

I just repaired my pump today, the same pump you have. I bought the service kit, all your seals & diaghrams. When I open up the pump I found a broken clamping cup, sounds like your problem. I had to buy a pump & piston kit which had the part needed. I wrote in this forum about a three week wait for this second kit because no one stocks this kit. UPS delivered it yesterday and I repaired it and it works find. It has a in and out valves which keeps it from back flowing. I had to repair my pump because it had a leak from the diaphram and it was leaking into the bilge, bilge pump was going on every twenty minutes.
